What is your name and age? Molly Lutz and I’m 17.
What instrument do you play in the Band? I sing and also play the bass guitar.
Give us the background on how you got started singing, playing your instrument and becoming a musician?
I’m a fourth generation singer/vocalist in my family, going all the way back to my great grandmother and her two sisters “The Three Queens”. They sang in Milwaukee in the late 1930′s, and were on one of the first local television broadcasts. Also, two of my great aunts are professional singers. They both studied music in college and are still singing in NYC. One specialized in Opera and the other in more indie rock, before it was called indie rock:). My uncle is currently a professional Jazz singer out of Chicago. I guess you could say singing is a part of my family and has been a passion for me throughout my life. I have loved singing since I was four when I joined our Church choir. I remember singing through elementary school in choirs and performing solos in the concerts. I sang the National Anthem at a basketball game when I was very young. Then I entered middle school where I could participate in the school musicals. In eighth grade I received the lead role of Rosie Alvarez in Bye Bye Birdie. The experience of being the lead role in a musical, and the adrenaline of performing in front the crowd and audience made me want to act and sing more than anything else. After the musical, Jimmy (LIAT drummer) asked if I would be interested in being the lead singer in a band he was trying to form. I was a little hesitant because I had always seen myself as an actor doing musicals and plays and this was something I had never done before. I decide to give it a try and after a few practices I knew this was something that I wanted to do forever. So, we made the band official and gave ourselves the name “Life in a Tree” and the rest is history. I love being the singer and bassist in the band, being able to express myself in writing, singing and playing our music is such a wonderful feeling.
Who was your biggest inspiration to become a musician and why? My biggest inspirations are definitely my twin Uncles Myles and Drew. Myles is a professional jazz singer who lives in Chicago. He has been in many bands throughout his career from Blues to Jazz and is an amazing singer. His singing voice is probably one of the best voices I have ever heard and I would always love listening to his albums and CDs on car rides home when I was younger. Drew also sings, but is a very good stage actor who has lived in NYC, LA and Las Vegas and was in many shows. Both of them pursue their love for acting and singing and I hope to carry out my love for the art, someday, just like they have in their lives.
What is it like playing your music in front of a large crowd of fans? Playing in front of crowds is one of the best feelings I could ever take in.
